The Romans planted vines here in Bath dating back to the middle ages, there are still remnants in these fields of one of those vineyards.
Rainwater falling on the Carboniferous Limestone outcrop in the Mendip Hills descends to great depths in the Radstock Basin where it becomes geothermally heated, before rising beneath Bath and breaking through the aquiclude formed by the Mesozoic rocks.
This geology is certainly rare with it's geothermal underlay. Perhaps the Romans had access to ancient insight about this terroir and the characteristics expressed in vines grown here, to produce a unique and exquisite taste unlike anything in the world.
